After a long hiatus from the African market, Peugeot is planning a comeback to the pick-up market segment. To stand a chance, in a market that is already full of other models, the automaker is set to offer a model that promises to offer high levels of robustness and endurance. In addition, the 2018 Peugeot Pick Up will offer pretty of room for passengers and cargo thus making the pick-up truck ideal for business activities while still doubling up as a family hauler. Peugeot hopes to achieve its lost glory in this segment in the continent. The Peugeot 504 was the last pick-up truck Peugeot offered in the continent before it was discontinued in 2005.
2018 Peugeot Pick Up Exterior and Interior styling
The new 2018 Peugeot Pick Up will fall in the compact pick-up segment which comprises around 10% of the pick-up market in the continent. The truck has a high beltline and offers a high ground clearance of between 21 cm and 21.5 cm across trim levels; this comes in handy in African rough roads.
The front fascia looks rather sharp with a large grille that features a lion emblem at the center. The engine hood is rather flat. The cab and the bed are based on ladder chassis with 4-bladed springs and a stiff rear axle. In addition, the model rides on Yokohama tires. These features help improve the model’s endurance and reliability which enables it to navigate across different terrains with ease.
The cargo bed is spacious to help carry loads of cargo; it measures 1.4 m and 1.39 m long and wide respectively. It has anchoring hooks on the rear. In addition, the walls of the cargo bed have a resin cover that helps enhance the robustness of the model. The pick-up truck has a payload of 815 kg.
To distinguish the truck from the crowd, the pick-up track features a chrome bow at each side of the cargo bed as well as chrome footboards and roof bars.
The cabin is tuned to offer reliability. The automaker offers several features as standard including a radio, a CD player, manual air-conditioning, a USB port, and electric windows. Several safety systems are also standard including ABS, rear parking assist and a package of airbags for the driver and front passenger.
According to the automaker, the cabin is the most spacious in the segment which gives passengers plenty of space; this makes it ideal for family or business use.
Engine and performance
Peugeot hast has taken time to design an engine that is customized to perform well in the African continent. The unit is a 2.5 L, turbo diesel that produces 116 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque. The engine mates to a 5-speed manual transmission system. The truck is available in AWD or RWD driving modes. Both modes have been enhanced; the RWD variants will have a longitudinal drive shaft, as well as a rear differential all, mounted on the rear axle.
On the other hand, AWD models feature a special lever that facilitates a transfer of some power to the front wheels. This allows the driver to vary power transfer to the wheels, whether AWD High or AWD Low as the situation demands. The system is set to allow the vehicle to send extra torque to some wheels at slow speeds to help the model maneuver out of extreme conditions.
Price and release date
Peugeot is yet to put a price tag on the new truck; however, going by the level of competition in the market and considering the fact that the automaker has been absent in the market for quite a while, the model will be affordably priced to stand a chance. The pick-up truck will be delivered to dealerships starting this September.
