New 2018 Toyota Supra coming next year! For quite some time (since 2012), a rumor had been doing rounds on the internet about a joint venture between BMW and Toyota.
Finally, we can reveal that one of the results of the collaboration is a brand new sports car which will be the successor of the Toyota Supra. The collaboration will also see BMW produce a successor of the BMW Z4, the model is christened the “BMW Z5”. Read along for more details:
2018 Toyota Supra Exterior
The development of the vehicle has been shrouded in secrecy such that only few staff in Toyota knew of the existence of the model. BMW is in charge of the chassis development which will underpin both cars. The body of both models will extensively use carbon fiber, and aluminum to keep weight as minimum as possible. Reports indicate that the chassis will use a “frame-based format” which will enable both automakers to produce cars that are very different from each other.
As of now, only little is known about the vehicle’s exterior styling. However, we believe the model will adopt most of the Toyota FT-1 concept styling cues. The FT-1 was first showcased in 2014. The FT-1 was an upgrade of the 2007 Toyota FT-HS concept which was the first hint that Toyota was considering a Supra successor.
Despite a 7-year gap between the two concepts, they have many similarities which mean the 2018 Toyota Supra’s exterior will adopt most styling cues from the FT-1.
While not much is known about its exterior, both the Supra and the BMW Z5 will have a length of around 177 inches, a width of 72 inches and a height of around 52 inches, almost the same size as the Porsche 911.
2018 Toyota Supra Interior
Like the exterior, the interior of the 2018 Toyota Supra will likely borrow much of its styling cues from the FT-1 concept. However, the cabin won’t be overly race-focused. Rather, the cabin will strike a balance between convenience and luxury offerings. This will enable the new Supra to give the likes of the Acura NSX a run for their money.
Therefore, expect to find a more conventional center stack, a stylish instrument cluster and a revised dash which will be adopted from the FT-1. I don’t expect the steering wheel to be much sporty.
Engine Specs and performance
On the drive-trains front, BMW will provide their turbocharged 3.0 L, 6-cylinder engine which is rated at 335 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque.
The Supra will also be powered by a hybrid engine which will pair the BMW-supplied 3.0 L mill with a Toyota-supplied lithium-ion battery pack to power the plug-in version of the Supra. This package will produce 473 horses.
According to reports, The Supra will forego a weaker engine so as not to overlap with the upcoming Scion FR-S.
Price and release date
We have learned that the 2018 Toyota Supra is in an advanced development stage as of this writing. The model may be showcased at an international Auto show early next year with a debut at the Detroit Auto Show or at the Geneva Auto show the likely destinations.
As for the price, the automaker has remained tight lipped but we believe the model will attract in excess of $50,000. The Toyota Supra will however be offered on sale in the last quarter of 2017 or early 2018.
The 2018 Toyota Supra will rival the upcoming Acura NSX. This will be a difficult fete for the Supra to achieve considering the NSX is way more powerful and expensive. Acura is in fact targeting the likes of Audi R8 with the revived NSX.
