Luxury automakers joined the “crossover rush” a bit late than other brands. They took time to realize that the “crossover” was a storm that could not be ignored or taken lightly. One such automaker was Volvo. However, credit to its designers, after the automaker debuted the XC60 eight years ago, the model has managed to curve a successful niche for itself in the highly competitive SUV segment. This is courtesy of its attractive exterior design and good interior packaging. However, since its initial debut it has only undergone a single upgrade back in 2013. After a long wait, finally, the automaker is planning a more comprehensive overhaul for the 2018 model year. Our spy photographers have already caught the second-generation Volvo XC60 making testing runs wrapped in playschool-like plastic body cladding. The new 2018 Volvo XC60 will use the automaker’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Read along for more information:
2018 Volvo XC60 Exterior
Due to the heavy camouflage, we can tell little about the model’s exterior styling. According to rumors and from the camouflage photos in our possession, it is clear that the XC60 front end is based on that of the XC90. As such, the model will likely have a shiny chrome grille flanked by “Thor’s hammer” headlights. Its bumper, however looks placed lower and looks more aggressive. The flanks will likely resemble the XC90.
The rear is what will largely distinguish the XC60 from the XC90. The XC60 has a sloping roofline (more of a coupe) that makes it look sportier than its big brother does. The rear will also feature an angled rear window, another hint for a coupe-like design.
2018 Volvo XC60 Interior
Due to the heavy camouflage, it was impossible to make out what the cabin of the testing mule looks like. However, the cabin will be revised to improve its credentials in a market with the likes of BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. Credible information indicates that the XC60 will adopt the XC90 styling. The cabin will be very luxurious with features such as a 9.0-inch infotainment display screen that features an intuitive user interface and detailed graphics.
Expect the SUV to feature premium leather upholstery with a premium wood trim. The model will be well equipped with all the latest technologies in the industry. Among the likely features, include a 12.3-inch digital display, surround-view camera and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Passengers will enjoy awesome natural lighting from the model’s slide-open panoramic roof.
We will update you with more information once we capture the model without much camouflage or when the automaker discloses more about the model’s cabin styling.
Engine Specs and performance
It is still months away before the on sale release of the Volvo XC60. Although Volvo has not officially released details of the drive-trains that will power the model, we have credible reports on the same. For the base T5, the automaker will likely feature the current 2.0 L, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 240 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
Higher trims will be powered by a supercharged version of the 4-cylinder engine. This iteration will be capable of producing over 300 horses as well as over 300 lb-ft of torque. Only these engines will be offered in the US market. Other markets will also get a diesel mill. It is however not clear if Volvo will offer a less powerful iteration of the hybrid mill used on the XC90. On the XC90, the engine produces 400 hp.
Price and release date
The Volvo XC60 will be showcased in the upcoming Geneva Auto show in March. We will be able to tell you more about the vehicle after the show. As for the price, expect the SUV to be slightly more expensive than the outgoing version. I think a price of around $41,000 for the base model is a good guess. Sales will commence towards the end of the year.
