Every auto show produces a surprise with a model or a number of them that were not even hinted by the manufacturers. During this year’s Geneva Auto Show, Bentley stole away the show with the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept.
Though rumors had been going around about the British’ automaker’s plans to build a brand new small sports car to sit behind the Continental, the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 still caught us by surprise since it came looking different than the Bentley sports cars we are used to.
Bentley’s CEO Wolfgang Durheimer confirmed that they are in fact planning to take the stunning model into production.
Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 Exterior
The model looks stunningly elegant. Its exterior profile is a good blend of 1950s dimensions with modern design cues. It looks clean but retains a number of muscular surfaces. The automaker revealed that its designers drew inspiration from the aerodynamic looks of the aircraft wings and fuselages.
The front looks like a typical Bentley sports car. It features a huge giant mesh grille with the number 6 placed on the middle. The grille is flanked by four round-shaped headlights. The front bumper is integrated with two LED strips at each far end. At the back, the model looks leaner compared to current Bentley models. It features wide shoulder lines similar to that of the Aston Martin while its LED taillights are oval shaped and resemble the exhaust pipes.
The exhaust tips, mesh grille, side vents and door handles are all 3D printed. On the sides, the look is that of a typical Bentley though it seems more athletic due to the long hood, muscular fenders, and a short front overhang not forgetting its huge wheels.
Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 Interior
The cabin of the Bentley is an excellent piece of exceptional craftsmanship. It complements the exterior look. A good thing about the interior is that most of its features look production ready unlike many concepts.
The cabin features a two-tone Poltrona Frau Leather trim of saddle-brown and green with steel, aluminum and cherry wood trimmings on some surfaces. The interior is also a mix of analogue detailing and modern as well as futuristic features. The vehicle will accommodate 2 passengers on its quilted sports seats.
The vehicle will feature a narrow center console mounted with a 12-inch touch-screen display. Door panels are 3D quilted and feature a solid cherry wood finish. The result is a diamond-like look that is accentuated with a copper center. Its trunk space will feature 2 compartments for easier cargo storage.
It is not clear what drive-train the automaker will use for the EXP 10 Speed 6. Though the concept was showcased as a hybrid, the CEO continued to say that they intend to make the model the company’s first full production electric automobile. The model is set to take Bentley to a new direction in the luxury sports car business.
However, Durheimer insisted that going fully electric on the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 does not mean the vehicle won’t have a huge internal combustion drive-train synonymous with Bentley. Since the Bentley is keeping engine specs close to its chest, we are left with no option but to speculate about the possibilities. Going with its nomenclature, the vehicle could feature a synchronous motor for each wheel just like Audi is doing with the R8 e tron or Mercedes with their SLS E-Cell.
The CEO said that the engine will have a range of around 300 miles which will take the luxury electric cars to a whole new level showing that they can match and even beat Tesla at its own game. The nomenclature also hints at the possibility of a 6-cylinder engine; however, Volkswagen, Bentley’s parent company discontinued the 6-cylinder engines on original Speed 6 Bentleys meaning a twin-turbo V-6 is the most probable.
What the automaker will put under the hood is only know to them so keep popping back to get more updates on this stunner.
Price and release date
The EXP 10 Speed 6 price is expected to fall below the base Continental models. As such, the model will cost around $ 150,000. As of the moment, the automaker has not hinted to any possible release date but we believe the model could make a debut in 2019.
The Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 will face competition from Mercedes-AMG GT and Aston Martin V8 Vantage which both are equipped with V-8 drive-trains.
