The Skoda Rapid lineup posted good results in 2015 selling more units than its popular rivals in Europe. The model outshone the likes of Mazda 3, Hyundai i30, Honda Civic, Nissan Pulsar, and Citroen C4.
The best part is that the model is not even a genuine C-segment car but it has won the hearts of many people in Europe. This can be attributed to Skoda’s excellent combination of practical features and fresh designs. The lineup now has its guns pointed to the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus, the trendsetters in this segment. To help the model in this regard, the automaker is adding a visual package to the lineup dubbed the “ Skoda Rapid Spaceback ScoutLine”.
The model is set to add a dose of faux-4×4 ruggedness to the exterior profile of the model. The version will only feature crossover-type exterior upgrades without any complementing mechanical upgrades. This is the same approach VW used with the Polo hatchback where the VW Cross Polo features only visual upgrades. The model will be offered in Europe only but reports indicate that it won’t be sold in the UK.
Skoda Rapid Spaceback Visual upgrades
The visual upgrades on new Skoda Rapid Spaceback ScoutLine include redesigned bumpers both front and rear. The new bumpers feature scuff plates and are finished in black and silver. The automaker has added plastic lower body cladding on the sides including on wheel arches and door sills. Its side mirror caps are coated in black and silver like the bumpers.
The version will ride on either 16-inch or 17-inch Camelot alloy wheels. To finish up the Scoutline sprucing, the model features pistachio green paintwork but the automaker says it can be had with all hues available on the regular Rapid Spaceback.
Except for these visual tweaks, the car remains the same meaning AWD is not available and the suspension is not raised also.
2017 Skoda Rapid Spaceback Interior
The interior remains that of the regular Spaceback model. The interior is not the Spaceback’s best suit. Nonetheless, the cabin is functional and is decorated with a cost-saving philosophy.
The cabin though is comfortable and features numerous plastic surfaces. The cabin will accommodate five passengers with sufficient legroom and headroom except at the rear where tall passengers will find the headroom a bit lacking. The cabin features a sat-nav system which adds slight flavor to an otherwise bland cabin.
The seats are a little flat and unsupportive. There are cup-holders in the rear seats armrests as well as carrier bag hooks in the trunk. The unique feature in the cabin is the ISOFIX-prepared seats particularly for kids at the rear.
Engine Specs and Performance
Under the hood, the Skora Rapid Scout Line version features the same engine lineup as the regular Spaceback models. The range of engines includes three gasoline and 2 diesel units. The first gasoline mill is a 1.2 L TSI unit rated at 90 hp.
The engine accelerates from 0-60 mph in 11.3 seconds and has a top speed of 124 mph. This engine is also tweaked to produce 110 hp and drops the time taken to run from 0-60 mph to 9.8 seconds. The most potent petrol engine is the 1.4 L which features a DSG twin-clutch automatic transmission as an option. The engine produces 125 hp and powers the hatchback to move from0-60 mph in 9 seconds and has a top speed of 129 mph.
Switching to diesel engines, the first unit is a 1.4 L TDI good for 89 hp and is paired with both a manual gearbox and a DSG transmission. Manual models run from 0-60 mph in 11.7 seconds while the automatic loses a tenth of a second. Top speed is 115 mph. The second diesel unit is a 1.6 L unit capable of 114 hp. It powers he car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 10 seconds and has a top speed of 125 mph.
Price and release date
Though the model lacks the charisma to climb to the top of the segment, its combination of strong practicability with an irresistible price that offers excellent value for money is set to win over many admirers. The 2017 Skoda Rapid will go on sale this July in Europe.
The automaker has not announced its price but expect it to be slightly expensive than the regular Spaceback, and starts from about 13,000 euros for basic trim level with 1,2 TSI petrol engine.
